All corals belong to the group Cnidaria. The Cnidarians are a natural group of invertebrate animals that have a simple organisation. Than most of the invertebrates in the ocean they have evolved a great attraction for common people.

Often they are colorful, solitary and colonial in form these are the factors that catches the eye of common people who see corals.

There are different kinds of coral like; few corals swim or float on ocean floor, few stay attached or loose on the floors of the ocean, lakes or river (lagoon or brackish water) Cnidarians have no skeleton they only have organic protein skeleton. Those lacking a Mineralized skeleton is rare or unknown as fossil. The name coral is given to certain groups of cnidarians because they have calcareous skeleton. The fossil record of corals are good due to easy preservation of skeleton.
