'Old is Gold' suits for everything in the world including the field Palaeontology. Today let's discuss about the exact age of Upper Gondwana horizon which is still under a little dispute. Upper Gondwana horizon starts from Sivaganga and ends at Bhutan as detached patches all along the eastern coastal area where we could find leaf fossils all through the stretch. There is one place named Rajamal volcanic traps where we could find fossilized ptillophyllum leaf species embedded on sediments inter-bedded/below volcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks are substances that contain radioactive minerals in it and with this Dr.Agarwal and Dr. Rama did radioactive dating to identify the age of rocks found in Rajamal volcanic traps and dated it to the Aptian age which is 125 to 113 million years, then it was inferred that upper Gondwana horizon will be of Aptian stage. Therefore, all around India, age of fossils found from Upper Gondwana bed is 125 to 113 million year old. I render my sincere thanks to Dr. K. Ayyasami sir for the information provided.
NOTICE: *Still there are few old articles mentioning this that's why I termed OLD IS GOLD. *This article may also exclude the debate running in our mind if Gondwana is a period or landmass.
