Alligator gar is a ray – finned euryhaline related to the bow-fin. These alligator gar’s are one of the largest fish in the gar family and also one of the largest fish in freshwater regions of North America. The fossil records of the Alligator Gar traces back to the cretaceous period that is 100 million years ago. “Gars” are always referred to as “Primitive fishes” or “Living fossils” because they have retained most of the characteristic features of their ancestors who lived millions of years ago such as spiral valve intestines that is similar to the digestive system of sharks and the ability to breathe both in air and water.
Their common name was derived from the resemblances of American Alligator particularly their broad snouts and long sharp teeth. Ancedotol evidences say that an Alligator Gar can grow up to 10 feet ( 3.0m ) in length.
