FACTS ABOUT MEGALODON BIVALVE

Megalodons are an extinct group of marine Bivalves that ruled the earth from Devonian to Jurassic period. These organisms could be called as heart shells because they are in the shape of heart with two equal sized valves. The specialty of this particular organism is, the way they open their body to capture food differs from other common Bivalves.


Usally when we hear the term 'Megalodon' all that comes to our mind is the furious marine fighter Megalodon shark but, there is something new to know in this chapter. With the help of below given points the confusing doubt would get clarified.


  • There is no shark called as 'Megalodon Shark'.

  • Basically the sharks got their name from the extinct group of large sea shell called Megalodon bivalve.

  • The sharks were named so; due to the enormous tooth they had, those teeth were bit equivalent to the size of the Megalodon bivalve.

  • The records says Megalodon Shark are an extinct group of shark that dominated the ocean 20 to 3.6 million years ago from the early Miocene to Pliocene.

  • Therefore its proven that Megalodon shark obtained its name from the extinct group of invertebrate organism called Megalodon bivalve which ruled the oceans from the Devonian to Jurassic period.

  • Scientifically Megalodon shark is called as Carcharocles Megalodon at present (2020) its known as Otodus Megalodon.
